Judge Mary Lou Alvarez is a proud native Texan and the current judge of Bexar County’s 45th District Court. In 2017, Judge Alvarez decided to run for office after years working in private practice representing victims of domestic violence during divorce, custody, and protective order litigation. Prior to her work in private practice in San Antonio, Alvarez worked as a staff attorney at Texas Rio Grande Legal Aid.
She earned her undergraduate degree in Industrial Engineering and Engineering Management from Stanford University, and after two years working as a manufacturing engineer, attended law school at Seton Hall. Since her election, Judge Alvarez has remained committed to providing justice without exception. In 2019, she was appointed Co-Chair of the Judicial Committee for Bexar County & the city of San Antonio’s Collaborative Commission on Domestic Violence, which seeks to bring together relevant stakeholders to craft a coordinated community response to domestic violence.
Judge Alvarez also runs quarterly lunch and learn sessions, hosting experts for lunch and learn presentations working to build domestic violence awareness in the community.
